Spirit of Music (1999, Elektra)

As reggae's foremost internationalist ensemble, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers have taken their father's music in directions musically uncharted while never losing sight of their foundation of faith, fellowship and family.

"Spirit of Music" continues this tradition, with the spare, bluesy feel of several tracks presenting a side of the band not previously heard. "Keep My Faith" shines as one of Ziggy's most heartfelt and powerful vocal performances to date, while Stephen produces a now typically powerful lead on "Couldn't Be Better". The Marley girls sparkle as usual throughout. Add co-producer Don Was to the mix and the result is a beautifully crafted and stylistically varied effort. Check it.
